Pox 52: a Dwarf Seyfert 1 Galaxy with an Intermediate-mass Black Hole
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe new optical images and spectra of POX 52, a dwarf galaxy with an active nucleus that was originally detected in the POX objective-prism survey. While POX 52 was originally thought to be a Seyfert 2 galaxy, the new data reveal an emission-line spectrum very similar to that of the dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4395, with broad components to the permitted line profiles, and we classify POX 52 as a Seyfert 1 galaxy. The host galaxy appears to be a dwarf elliptical, and its brightness profile is best fit by a Sérsic model with an index of 3.6±0.2 and a total magnitude of MV = −17.6. Applying mass-luminosity-linewidth scaling relations to estimate the black hole mass from the broad Hβ linewidth and nonstellar continuum luminosity, we find MBH ≈ 1.6×105 M⊙. The stellar velocity dispersion in the host galaxy, measured from the Ca II λ8498,8542 Å lines, is 36± 5 km s−1, also suggestive of a black hole mass of order 105 M⊙. Further searches for active nuclei in dwarf galaxies can provide unique constraints on the demographics of black holes in the mass range below 106 M⊙. Dwarf Seyfert 1 Nuclei and the Low-mass End of the Mbh −σ Relation
To examine the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy velocity dispersion for low black hole masses, we have measured the velocity dispersions of 15 Seyfert 1 galaxies from the catalog of Greene & Ho (2004). These Seyferts were selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have estimated black hole masses below 106 M⊙. The data are consistent with a straightforward downward extrap...
متن کاملX-ray Emission from Active Galactic Nuclei with Intermediate Mass Black Holes
We present a systematic X-ray study of eight active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with intermediate mass black holes (MBH ∼ 8− 95× 10 4 M⊙) based on 12 XMM-Newton observations. The sample includes the two prototype AGNs in this class – NGC 4395 and POX 52 and six other AGNs discovered with the Sloan Digitized Sky Survey. These AGNs show some of the strongest X-ray variability with the normalized exces...
متن کاملLow-mass Seyfert 2 Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We describe a sample of low-mass Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, having a median absolute magnitude of Mg = −19.0 mag. These galaxies are Type 2 counterparts to the Seyfert 1 galaxies with intermediate-mass black holes identified by Greene & Ho (2004). Spectra obtained with the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager at the Keck Observatory are used to determine the ce...
متن کاملRadio Emission on Sub-parsec Scales from the Intermediate-mass Black Hole in Ngc4395
The Seyfert 1 nucleus of NGC4395 is energized by a black hole of mass 3.6× 10M⊙ (Peterson et al.), making it one of only two nuclear black holes of intermediate mass, 10−10M⊙, detected in the radio regime. Building upon UV and X-ray evidence for outflows from this Seyfert nucleus, the VLBI High Sensitivity Array was used at 1.4 GHz to search for extended structure on scales greater than 5 mas (...
متن کاملRevised Rates of Stellar Disruption in Galactic Nuclei
We compute rates of tidal disruption of stars by supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei, using downwardly revised black hole masses from the M• −σ relation. In galaxies with steep nuclear density profiles, which dominate the overall event rate, the disruption frequency varies inversely with assumed black hole mass. We compute a total rate for non-dwarf galaxies of ∼ 10−5 yr−1 Mpc−3, about ...
